Where fashion careers begin

After school 4.30 – 6.30pm

After school 4.30 – 6.30pm
  • Our after school sessions are for those teens (13+) who want their own style, or who are bored with hand sewing and want to extend their skills.
  • The sessions are small, no more than 6 participants per facilitator and provide a great opportunity for the participants to get extra quality time with the experienced sewist.
  • They learn valuable life skills and of course a sense of accomplishment from each completed project.
  • The sessions are practical workshops, where you learn quick and easy techniques.
  • Sessions are Wednesday from 4.30 – 6.30pm
  • Projects start each term.
    • Students are welcome to use the Academy’s machines which are  proudly sponsored by Bernina
    • There is a charge  of $5 charge for a Bernina bobbin.
    • Project for beginners in term 3 is an A-Line skirt.  A pattern is provided in the students size.  The pack includes ½ meter of calico, zip, button and waistband interfacing.  Project material cost is $12.50.
    • You will need to supply basic sewing supplies, i.e. pins, hand sewing needle, scissors, un-picker, pen, pencil and ruler, a small note book, and your pattern and fabric
    • And a box/bag to keep everything in.  Please name as much as you can, you may find you need to replace pins, but that is normal.

Fees: $337.35 per term payable in advance.

    • Classes run during the school term, which averages 9 weeks
    • Payment in full is expected at the first class of term.
    • If your teen misses a class invoiced amount is unchanged and non refundable.

I really enjoy sewing and making clothes, The academy has great premises, great machines and great tutors. I enjoy making my own project as I get to choose what to make. Megan Leechi
I have been coming to the Academy for about 18 months, I like to make my own clothes and I occasionally gift them to my sister. I have also sold something I made on Trademe.  I can easily get the attention of the tutor and can make my own stuff. Jade McQuoid

    Ensure your child's safety

You must advise us of any medical conditions and/or special learning needs. All such information will remain confidential.

    Sign In/Out Procedure

Students under the age of fourteen (14) must arrive at the stated times for their class, accompanied by a caregiver who is required to sign them in with a signature. Caregivers must collect students from the studio and sign them out after each class. Students will not be permitted to leave the studio without a caregiver present. You must inform the tutor anytime someone other than the registered caregivers will be collecting the child. The centre will not be held responsible for the safety of children who arrive early at class and are left unattended by caregivers.

    Uncollected Students

If no-one has arrived to collect a child at the end of class, the tutor will attempt to contact parents/caregivers and the alternative contact person using the emergency details supplied at time of enrolment. After half an hour, if no-one has arrived to collect the child and the tutor has been unable to contact anyone after repeated attempts, the tutor will transport the child to the nearest police station and will transfer the child to their care.

    Disruptive Behaviour

Management reserves the right to exclude from the programme any child who is constantly disruptive, does not adhere to the programme rules or poses a significant risk to the safety of themselves or others. The tutor reserves the right to contact and request caregivers to collect students displaying disruptive behaviour during class. NZ Academy of Fashion will strive to be fair and consistent.

    Accidents and Emergencies

Parents will be contacted immediately and staff will perform appropriate first aid and if necessary call an ambulance. Any urgent medical attention will be at the parents’ cost. Children will not be transported by private vehicles unless there is a serious emergency e.g. the need to evacuate due to tsunami, earthquake or when a child has not been picked up and needs to be transported to the police station.

If you have any comments or concerns about the sessions, please speak to the tutor in the first instance.
