Be a Fashion Designer! Be a Costume Designer!
Really, really, really cool career goals, and you can achieve them
But have you thought about how you go about this? There are any number of options in our local Universities, you can get a degree in Fashion, a degree in Costume Design, but what you (mostly) miss is a grounding in the craft side of fashion.
So why go onto further study without the basics in place?
Take advantage of your Gap Year. At the Academy you will study 2 days per week and work or keep working on your portfolio for University at the same time. If you start in this second intake you will have finished for the start of University and have a head start on your future studies.
At NZ Academy of Fashion we don’t teach you to be a machinist, we don’t teach you to perfectly sew seam after seam, what we do teach you is:-
- how to use an industrial sewing machine,
- the techniques that allow you to create your garments that up to now have been images in your head.
- pattern drafting so you can fit (again mostly) any “body”. (No relying on blocks)
- how to write garment spec’s so the manufacturer in China can read them
- industry jargon
At the end of 9 months you will be able to put together a small range, and have the skills necessary to take you onto the next stage of education in fashion design or into your own business.
A Certificate in Apparel Creation from the Academy takes 9 months, 2 days per week over the secondary school term, and is equivalent to a Level 4 NZQA qualification.
The classes are small up to 8 students per class; we know everyone by name and located in Newmarket we are easy to get to from any part of the city.
Call to have an interview and look over the premises where we can answer your questions. The mid year intake starts after the July school holidays. The Academy has 2 intakes per year and follows the secondary school timetable and holidays. 2017 Class will be on Monday and Tuesday.
