The thing I most liked about the draping course, was getting some “me” time and learning new “tricks” of a much loved hobby.  I thought I was going to learn about how to make pattern pieces without using the pattern block, what I actually learnt was how to manipulate fabric to get a desired effect and then cut a pattern piece from the manipulated fabric.  Taking this course taught me how to make better use of a mannequin and I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to begin learning Draping

I found the 8 Week Saturday patternmaking great, really useful.  I joined with making a wedding dress in mind as my daughter was getting married. It was good to know the basics of patternmaking, but my difficulty was the time between courses as I  worked and didn’t have too much time in between to practice.  This course covered everything we need to know and more, one of the biggest benefits was measuring properly and being able to make a block for anybody.  After much refining and redesigning I made a wedding gown for my daughter.  I made a mock up and surprisingly it looked very good, however in the right fabric, with the correct drape it looks amazing and flows with the body.  I have done a lot of sewing before, evening gowns and such, but this course really helped with patternmaking.

On this Draping Course I thought I was going to learn the concept of draping and the way the grain lines control the drape.  I did just that and also discovered a lot of food for thought about the usage of pleats and tucks.  The biggest benefit of the course, was the freedom to be creative and try out patterns that were challenging for me.  I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to extend their patternmaking skills.

I can’t even begin to explain how much fun I have had this year at New Zealand Academy of Fashion Design.
It has opened up a whole new world to me and I love it!
I started the 2 year Diploma Course in Febuary 2011, with very basic sewing skills and no experience in pattern drafting what-so-ever. Before I started I used to get so frustrated because everything I made didn’t quite fit properly and always looked handmade and badly sewn. Now I can happily say I am confidently designing, drafting and sewing my own garments with the help of the wonderful teachers at the Academy. It’s been great having the freedom to choose whatever I want make within each category, my imagination has been the only limitation.
The classes are heaps of fun and because they’re so small you get a lot of one on one help and guidance from the teachers who are always brimming with ideas and knowledge.
I would recommend this course for anyone who loves to sew. Whether you want to do it for your own enjoyment or have it as a career choice, this is the place to be.
I can’t wait to start next year and learn all the wonderful little secrets about sewing and embellishing.

When I came along to Open Sewing I found a lovely bunch of ladies, and a really friendly teacher. I liked all the little tricks Kay taught me and also how to finish garments professionally.
I have made patterns of my favourite clothes, made great friends, and I enjoy this time out from my busy life.
